ENDANGERMENTS & EXTINCTIONS
It is estimated that one-third of all reef-building corals,
a third of all freshwater mollusks, a third of sharks and rays,
a quarter of all mammals, a fifth of all reptiles,
and a sixth of all birds are headed toward oblivion.
— Elizabeth Kolbert, The Sixth Extinction
These pieces mostly deal with concerns about species which face extinction in the near future.
How sad that during this “Anthropocene Era” human activities have resulted in such major losses.
For some species, it is too late.
Yet there is hope that we can, by changing
some of what we do, leave a planet for our children
which will continue to support human life.
We can thrive on the body of this earth only when we stop
seeing the earth and its inhabitants as separate from ourselves
and our survival. Every living being is part of the remedy.
