BRANCHING OUT

Although she’s explored many media, Dorothy Bunny Bowen has long been known for her wax resist paintings on silk. She’s also had a lifelong love of trees and their natural beauty of form.
Combining juniper, aspen, and pine with paint, fired clay, and Japanese batik, Bowen celebrates our arboreal companions, who exhale the oxygen we inhale and who may well outlive us by centuries.
“Cool breezes rustle aspen leaves, which flame out in Fall, then mulch icy winter ground. Tough, twisted junipers send roots out into the dry desert searching for water. Both species are dioecious…Male and female… each with its own growth habit. One survives in the place where I live, the other thrives in my high country retreat.”
